Magazine Spread Reboot

The article “Is Toxic Positivity The Thing That’s Making Work Unbearable?” identifies a type of workplace that makes employees feel as though having negative emotions makes them undesirable teammates. For this spread I divided the article into its three basic parts. First, accentuating the main introduction of burnout and authenticity in a work environment. Secondly, identifying a toxic workplace. Finally, the steps to avoid and get out of a bad situation if you work in a toxically positive environment.

I chose the saturated blue accent bars as a way to divide the segments of the article as well as to convey a calming tone to an otherwise stressful problem to be solved. This dreary subject of not being genuine is shown in the gray base tones of the selected images. Beside the bottom left segment on identifying a toxic workplace I chose an image of flowers and a message board that reads “everything happens for a reason”. This phrase is one of many that can be taken as dismissive of overwhelming workloads or stress on an employee. The right page of the spread focuses on solutions to this problem. A “fake it until you make it” strategy is suggested for people struggling with this problem. I included an image of a woman faking a smile with her hands holding her expression in place as a nod to the solutions listed in the article segment underneath her.
